Garden Lighting is For Life, Not Just For Christmas

A UFO paying Earth a flying visit during December might well return home with the impression that we are a planet with an insatiable appetite for outdoor lighting. Every shopping street is festooned with Christmas illuminations. Every other house seems to be picked out with twinkling fairy lights. Some even have giant illuminated Santas, sleighs and snowmen glowing improbably on their roofs and front lawns. The occupants of that UFO could be forgiven for thinking that Christmas exists primarily to celebrate electric lighting rather than the baby Jesus. I guess it should come as no surprise that exuberant outdoor lighting should have become part and parcel of the Christmas period. Here in the Northern Hemisphere it's mid-winter, a time when the daylight hours are depressingly short and the nights seem to last forever. So what better way to celebrate the season and lift the spirits than with a riot of frivolous outdoor lighting to brighten things up a bit? And what better way for retailers to lure us out onto the winter streets where they can then seduce us into a little more last-minute Christmas shopping? What is surprising, though, is how so many people who would fight to the death to protect their right to buy Christmas fairy lights think buying permanent garden lighting to be an outrageous excess. "Just think of the installation cost!" they exclaim. "Think of the electricity bill!" Which is a pity, because just as Christmas lighting brings a sprinkle of fairy dust to our most dismal time of year, so garden lighting can bring a little bit of magic to your outside spaces every night of the year.
